QR code and ZUGFeRD

In Switzerland, the QR code replaces ESR forms. Germany has opted for a different procedure with ZUGFeRD. uTraxx supports both variants.

Whether for COVID certificates, quick access to websites, or admission tickets, the Quick Reader Code is becoming established in many areas of everyday life as a carrier of information. All you need to read it is a smartphone with a camera or another reader that can convert the digital data stored in the QR code into text.

Switzerland is using the QR code to replace the orange payment slip or ESR, which has been in use for decades. The changeover must be completed by October 2022 at the latest. The basis for this is the ISO 20022 standard, which establishes a uniform procedure within the SEPA euro payment area. With ZUGFeRD (Central User Guide of the Electronic Invoice Forum Germany), Germany has chosen a different path than Switzerland.

QR code – mix of black and white squares:

The QR code has several advantages over conventional information carriers such as barcodes or ESR forms for payment transactions: it is particularly secure and can convey complex and extensive information such as payment terms and discounts. The QR code is based on a mix of black and white squares that represent the encoded data in binary form. Three larger squares in the corners delimit the field and specify the reading direction for the reader.

All other information is encoded in many small squares – an integrated error correction ensures that the code remains readable even if up to 30% of the information is lost. Incidentally, the QR code was originally developed in the 1990s by a subsidiary of the car manufacturer Toyota to mark assemblies and components for automobile production.

ZUGFeRD

Germany has been using ZUGFeRD as its electronic invoicing procedure since March 2020. It is based on EU Directive 2014/55/EU and European Standard 16931. Here, too, the information is digitally packaged and machine-readable. To this end, ZUGFeRD integrates structured invoice data in XML format into PDF files. While the QR code allows a wide range of information to be transported and thus also enables invoicing for both B2B and B2C, ZUGFeRD primarily addresses companies as its target group.

uTraxx supports both variants. This is because both methods lay the foundation for invoice recipients to process invoices quickly, efficiently, and without errors. If both the Swiss and German markets are served, a combination of QR code and ZUGFeRD is possible.
